Worcation

Worcation – that means creative international work in a historical place – Stalag VIII A. Every summer, young people come together in Görlitz-Zgorzelec to experience history and work together peacefully at an authentic historical site, which has been a place of despair and death for many – the WWII German prisoner of war camp Stalag VIII A.

25 young Europeans will meet and live together in the European City of Görlitz-Zgorzelec. During these two weeks in the summer holidays, they get to know young people from other cultures, exchange experiences about political situation in their own countries and think about a common future in Europe. They make new friendships, learn something about tolerance and confidence to one another and the work as a team.

During these two weeks the participants take part in the workshops which take place on the historical grounds of former POW camp Stalag VIII A. The participants address sociopolitical topics such as democracy, moral courage, diversity, equal opportunities for participation. They learn to better understand European History, which is still valid today and affects us all more than ever.

All participants are accommodated in a hostel in Görlitz. The group has the whole hostel for its sole usage and therefore can evolve very freely. One of the most important parts of Worcation is “self-organizing” which means the group has to cook, wash, clean and organize their evenings amongst themselves. Every observation and reflection, success and failure is discussed during a plenary session, which takes place every evening. After two weeks all participants will have gotten closer to people from other countries, spoken foreign languages, exchanged information and experience about the situations in their countries and talked about our common future in Europe. Because of the complex subject of the youth exchange participants should be able to speak and understand English on a communicative level.
