In the most south-east side of the twin city Görlitz-Zgorzelec (today´s district Ujazd, past´s Görlitz Moys) is a special and historical place, which was long time forgotten and is back in the awareness for a few years: the former prisoners of war camp STALAG VIII A. 120 000 prisoners of war were registered in STALAG VIII A between 1939 and 1945, estimated 12 000 did not survive their time in it. They came from a diverse range of counties, like the Soviet Union, Poland, France, Belgium, Great Britain and Yugoslavia. A lot of the prisoners were split up in work commandos and shaped in in this way the cityscape of Görlitz.
To remember everybody, who suffered, hoped and feared in STALAG VIII A, the MEETINGPOINT MUSIC MESSIAEN invites since 2008 every year to a special concert. That music does not separate, but connect and also helps to over come pain and misery, proved the french composer Olivier Messiaen. He created during his captivity in camp his musical masterpiece “Quartet of the End of Time” and performed it first with three other fellow prisoners at the camps theater barrack on the 15 of January in 1941. Today the quartet is a part of the most famous and played music works of the 20th century. Every year on the 15 of January the MEETINGPOINT MUSIC MESSISAEN reminds on this special occasion at the historical place of STALAG VIII A.
